Understanding Reading Texts – Skimming, Scanning and Reading for Detail

Reading sections in exams test more than just understanding words. They test speedaccuracy, and how well you can find and interpret information. To succeed, you need to learn three essential reading skills: skimming, scanning, and reading for detail.

1. Skimming – Get the Main Idea Quickly

Skimming means reading a text quickly to understand the general idea. Don’t stop to read every word. Instead:

  • Read headings and subheadings

  • Look at the first sentence of each paragraph

  • Pay attention to bold or italic words

This is useful for matching headings, or identifying the main topic.

2. Scanning – Find Specific Information Fast

Scanning is like searching for a name in a phone book. You’re not reading everything—just looking for:

  • Dates

  • Names

  • Numbers

  • Keywords from the question

Useful for short answer and True/False/Not Given tasks.

3. Reading for Detail – Understand the Full Meaning

After you skim or scan, some questions require a deeper understanding. Read the relevant paragraph carefully. Check the meaning of phrases, the writer’s opinion, and any subtle language (like modal verbs).

Grammar Focus:

Comparatives and Superlatives

Use comparatives to compare two things:

This text is longer than the last one.

Use superlatives to compare one against a group:

That was the most difficult reading passage so far.

Common mistakes:
❌ More easier → ✅ easier
❌ The most fastest → ✅ the fastest

Final Thoughts

Don’t try to read everything at the same speed. Learn when to skim, when to scan, and when to slow down. Smart reading saves time—and earns marks. Practise these strategies and you’ll become a faster, sharper reader.
