Mastering English Vocabulary – What to Learn and How to Learn It
Vocabulary is one of the most important parts of English exams. But learning long lists of random words isn’t very helpful. The secret? Learn the right words, in the right way.
1. Focus on Exam-Relevant Vocabulary
Not all words are equally useful. Focus on:
Academic words (e.g. analyse, evidence, consistent)
Topic vocabulary (e.g. climate change, education, health)
Phrasal verbs and collocations (e.g. take part in, make progress)
Use official word lists like the Academic Word List (AWL) or exam preparation books.
2. Learn Words in Context
Don’t just memorise definitions. Learn how the word is used:
Read example sentences
Watch videos using the word
Write your own examples
You’ll remember it better—and use it correctly.
3. Revise Regularly
Spaced repetition helps you remember more for longer. Revisit old vocabulary each week and quiz yourself.
Grammar Focus: Relative Clauses
Relative clauses add extra information to a noun:
The student who studied every day passed the exam.
I read an article which explained the new law.
Use who, which, that, where, whose.
Don’t repeat the subject:
❌ The man who he is a teacher…
✅ The man who is a teacher…

Final Thoughts
Good vocabulary doesn’t come from cramming. It grows when you learn with purpose, use it in sentences, and revise it over time. Stick with it—your word bank is your power in the exam room.
