Jack Valentine is said to be a secretive character who knocks on doors, leaves small gifts, and disappears before being caught. Children eagerly anticipate Jack Valentine's arrival, while adults enjoy the playful spirit of the tradition. Sometime Jack leaves a gift, sometimes a trick such as a lump of coal, and sometimes the present is attached to a piece of string and pulled away at the last minute.
