International Museum Day: Celebrating Culture, Curiosity, and Connection

Every year on 18 May, we celebrate International Museum Day—a global occasion to recognise the vital role that museums play in preserving history, inspiring curiosity, and shaping our understanding of the world. Whether you’re a lifelong art lover, a history enthusiast, or simply enjoy a quiet wander through fascinating exhibits, museums are spaces that connect us to our shared past, present and future.

What is International Museum Day?

Organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Museum Day was first held in 1977 and now sees participation from thousands of museums in over 150 countries. Each year, the day focuses on a particular theme that highlights how museums contribute to society—whether through education, sustainability, inclusion, or community engagement.

It’s a chance for museums large and small to throw open their doors (often for free or at discounted rates), host special events, and invite visitors to explore their collections in new and interactive ways.

Why Museums Matter

Museums are more than buildings filled with objects. They are gateways to understanding—places where stories come to life and learning feels like an adventure. From ancient artefacts and priceless artworks to local history and modern science, museums help us make sense of the world and our place within it.

They’re also crucial in preserving cultural heritage, promoting diversity and dialogue, and offering spaces for reflection, discovery, and imagination.

In an age of digital overload, a museum offers something quietly powerful: a moment to slow down, look closely, and engage deeply.

How It’s Celebrated

Museums across the UK and beyond celebrate the day with a range of activities:

  • Guided tours and behind-the-scenes talks

  • Interactive exhibitions and hands-on workshops

  • Family-friendly trails and storytelling sessions

  • Live performances and themed events

  • Virtual exhibitions for those joining from home

Whether it’s an art gallery, a natural history museum, a small local archive or a grand national institution, each has a unique story to tell—and today is the perfect time to discover it.

Get Involved

You don’t need to travel far to take part. Here are a few ideas:

  • Visit a museum near you and take someone who’s never been before

  • Share your favourite museum experience or object online

  • Support a local museum through donations or volunteering

  • Explore virtual museum tours from around the world

  • Encourage children and young people to explore museums and ask questions

Every visit, every conversation, every spark of curiosity helps keep the museum experience alive for the next generation.

A Day for Everyone

International Museum Day is about accessibility, inclusion, and community. It’s a celebration of human creativity, innovation, and resilience through the ages. Most of all, it’s a reminder that museums are not just about the past—they’re about building a more thoughtful, connected future.

So, whether you’re standing in front of a dinosaur skeleton, a Monet painting, a Viking sword, or a model of the moon—pause for a moment and marvel at the stories we choose to preserve and share.

Happy International Museum Day. See you in the galleries.
