The Complete B2 First Cambridge Masterclass Series

Five books. Five key language skills. Complete preparation for the Cambridge B2 First.

We are delighted to announce an important milestone for Prosperity Education’s Cambridge Masterclass series: with the publication of our new B2 Use of English and B2 Speaking titles, we now offer Masterclass books covering each of the five key language skills assessed at Cambridge B2 First (FCE):

Reading • Use of English • Speaking • Listening • Writing

Together, these five books form a comprehensive suite of resources for learners preparing for the B2 First, with each title focusing closely on the demands of a particular section of the examination.

The philosophy behind the series is simple. Exam practice is important – but students also need to understand how to approach each task, what examiners are looking for and why some answers are stronger than others.

That is where the Cambridge Masterclass series comes in.

Written by experts in English language teaching and assessment

The B2 Cambridge Masterclass series brings together four highly respected names in English language teaching, assessment and exam preparation:

Fiona Aish and Jo Tomlinson are directors of Target English, a consultancy providing tailor-made solutions in content creation, course provision, training and testing. They have co-written several leading titles in English exam preparation and create materials and assessment resources for a range of educational providers. Both are DELTA-qualified and hold MAs in ELT and Applied Linguistics and Language Testing, respectively.

Simon Haines is an ELT writer, teacher and teacher trainer who has written a wide range of course books, skills materials and teacher handbooks. He is co-author of the coursebook Landmark (Oxford University Press) and the exam-preparation titles First Masterclass (OUP), IELTS Masterclass (OUP) and Complete Advanced (Cambridge University Press).

Margaret Cooze holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and an MSc in English Language Teaching Management, and has worked in senior roles at Cambridge English Language Assessment and Cambridge Assessment International Education. She is also the author of several ELT resources published by Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

There are four parts to the B2 First Use of English section, and this write-in student book tackles each one individually, helping learners understand its particular characteristics and develop an effective approach to the questions.

Before students tackle exam-styled texts and questions, each unit provides a series of focused practice exercises accompanied by detailed answer keys explaining how and why answers are correct.

For each exam part, students then encounter two exam-styled tests. The accompanying answer keys go beyond simply supplying the right answer: they explain the reasoning behind correct responses while identifying why candidates may produce weaker answers.

Finally, four additional exam-styled practice tests allow learners to consolidate their approach to the different types of Use of English task they will face in the examination.

The result is a resource that combines language development, exam technique and realistic practice – helping students understand the mechanics of the Use of English paper rather than simply completing test after test.

Speaking can be one of the most challenging areas of exam preparation because students need more than knowledge of the task: they need to understand what an effective spoken response actually looks and sounds like.

Our B2 Speaking Masterclass resource is designed to provide exactly that support.

There are four parts to the B2 First Speaking exam, and this write-in student book examines each part individually, explaining its characteristics and providing guidance on how candidates should respond.

Each unit contains targeted practice exercises with detailed answer keys, before moving on to exam-styled questions and explanations of stronger and weaker candidate responses.

A particularly valuable feature is the inclusion of eight videos of simulated B2 Speaking examinations, reinforcing the learning throughout the resource and giving students the opportunity to see exam-style speaking tasks in action.

The resource concludes with four exam-styled practice tests, complete with model answers, enabling learners to bring together the techniques they have developed and practise approaching the different Speaking tasks with greater confidence.

The B2 First Listening exam contains four parts, and our B2 Listening Masterclass provides focused preparation for each of them.

This write-in student book examines each exam part separately, explaining its characteristics and giving learners guidance on how to respond to the questions they will encounter.

Students build towards complete exam-styled tasks through a series of practice exercises supported by detailed answer keys explaining how and why answers are correct.

For each exam part, there are also two full-length exam-style texts with questions. Detailed answer keys explain the correct responses while highlighting why candidates may be tempted to select incorrect alternatives – helping students become more alert to the demands of the Listening paper.

The book also includes four additional exam-styled practice tests, giving students the opportunity to consolidate their techniques and apply what they have learned under realistic exam conditions.

There are three parts to the B2 First Reading section, each making different demands on a candidate’s ability to understand and interpret written English.

Our B2 Reading Masterclass focuses on each of these parts individually. Students first learn about the characteristics of the task and how best to approach its questions before developing their skills through focused practice exercises.

Detailed answer keys help learners understand why the correct answers are correct, rather than simply telling them whether they succeeded.

For each exam part, students then work through two full-length exam-styled texts with questions. The answer keys explain the reasoning behind the correct answers and identify why candidates might choose incorrect alternatives – including the kinds of distractors that can make Reading questions particularly challenging.

Finally, four complete exam-styled practice tests enable students to consolidate their approach to the different Reading tasks and put their developing exam techniques into practice.

Writing presents a different challenge: there is rarely one single ‘correct’ response. Students therefore need to understand what distinguishes a strong answer from one that could be improved.

The B2 Writing Masterclass makes that distinction clear.

There are six possible task types in the B2 First Writing exam, and this resource focuses on each individually, explaining its characteristics and providing guidance on how to plan an effective response.

For each task-type question, students are shown two different responses. One is a strong response; the other demonstrates areas in which the candidate could improve.

Detailed commentary analyses the responses according to the official assessment criteria of Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation and Language, together with a breakdown of the marks each response could receive.

By seeing these differences in context, learners can develop a much clearer understanding of what examiners are looking for and apply those lessons to their own writing.

And the Cambridge Masterclass series doesn't stop at B2…

Prosperity Education's Cambridge Masterclass collection also provides focused preparation at B1 Preliminary, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency levels.

For learners preparing for B1 Preliminary, the B1 Writing Masterclass explores the three possible Writing task types individually.

Students study stronger and weaker responses to example questions, supported by detailed commentary against the assessment criteria, before consolidating their learning through four exam-styled practice tests.

For candidates progressing to C1 Advanced, the C1 Reading Masterclass provides expert guidance across the four parts of the Reading section.

Focused exercises, detailed answer keys and exam-styled questions help students understand why answers are correct and recognise where weaker responses can arise. The book also includes additional exam-style practice tests for consolidation.

The C1 Writing Masterclass takes learners systematically through the six possible task types in the C1 Advanced Writing exam.

Two student responses to example questions allow learners to compare stronger and weaker writing, with detailed comments categorised according to Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation and Language. Four additional exam-style practice tests provide further opportunities to put this understanding into practice.

At the highest level, the C2 Writing Masterclass applies the same detailed, analytical approach to preparation for C2 Proficiency.

Learners compare responses to exemplar questions and receive detailed commentary based on the official assessment criteria, helping them identify precisely what makes one response more effective than another. The book also contains four additional exam-style practice tests to consolidate their approach.
